Chiefs Update 7 - Week 5

The Chiefs escape from the Raiders in a 30-29 win

With the Chief's third prime-time game this season, the Chiefs provided us with yet another thriller. The Las Vegas Raiders, the Chief's biggest rival, came to Kansas City with a 1-3 record. Most people thought that it was going to be a blowout in the Chief's favor, but we were all wrong. The Raiders started the game with a three-and-out, punting the ball to Kansas City, but unfortunately, we did nothing with that drive and punted it back to the Raiders. After two touchdowns from the Raiders and a field goal, we quickly found ourselves facing the second half with a 17-point deficit, It was time for some Mahomes magic. Patrick Mahomes started to find his groove and hit Travis Kelce for his first of four touchdowns right before the end of the first half. After receiving the ball to begin the second half, the Chiefs found the end zone two more times, and before you knew it, the Chiefs were up by 4 points. In the fourth quarter, Travis Kelce caught his fourth touchdown pass, setting a Chiefs single-game record for most touchdowns caught by a tight end. After a Davante Adams touchdown and a failed two-point conversion by the Raiders, the Chiefs found themselves down by one point. Our defense stepped up and provided a fourth down stop that gave the Chiefs the win, with only a one-point margin of victory.

A Chiefs' roughing the passer call stirs up a conversation
about the rule

In the first half of Monday's game, Chiefs defensive star Chris Jones made a play that appeared to be a clean strip-sack of Raider's quarterback Derek Carr, however, the referees did not feel the same way. The referees called a controversial roughing the passer call on Chris Jones, which extended the Raider's drive and took away what would surely be a chance for the Chiefs to score in one of the last minutes of the first half. Social Media, the announcers, Chiefs fans, and football fans around the world were not happy with this call. The call in my opinion was a terrible one, Chris Jones had nowhere to place his body weight after sacking the quarterback, and the roughing of the passer penalty only applies if you purposely seek to hurt a quarterback. The fans at arrowhead stadium felt the same way, every time the referees got on the microphone to speak to the crowd, you could hear "booing" chants. After the game, the NFL announced that they would be reviewing the call, and how roughing the passer penalties are defined to ensure that a bad call like this doesn't hurt the integrity of any games in the future.
