Chiefs Update 1 - Preseason Week 3

Coming off of a win the week before hosting the newly named Washington Commanders, the Chiefs headed into Preseason Week 3 with heavy hearts after the former Chiefs Quarterback and local legend, Len Dawson, passed away on Wednesday. The entire organization and National Football League were stunned to lose the Super Bowl IV MVP. The Chief's next-door neighbor, The Kansas City Royals, paid tribute to Dawson by holding a moment of silence before the game. Fighting back a lot of emotion, the Chiefs marched out to play the Green Bay Packers at home the next day and defeated them 17-10 in a thrilling pre-season matchup. The beatdown wasn't before the Chiefs held their own tributes for Dawson. Patrick Mahomes and the offense re-enacted Dawson's famous huddle picture. The photograph went viral on social media and many people were moved to tears by the class act performed by the team's star quarterback.

The clear star of the game was Shane Buechele, the Chief's third-string Quarterback who started in place of Mahomes. Buechele went 11-17 passing and threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Bushman, a rookie hopeful caught two touchdowns and a long touchdown pass from Buechele. Bushman suffered a fractured clavicle towards the end of the game. We will see how his injury impacts his chances to make the final roster.

The NFL preseason is often a time for coaches and trainers to give prospective players a chance to make the regular season roster. Prospective players give it their all in the last preseason game of the year in hopes of landing a contract with the team. It's very exciting for Chiefs fans like myself to see these rookies fight to get a spot on the roster and to see what they could bring to the team during the regular season. As the team heads into a one-week bye before playing the Arizona Cardinals in Arizona on September 11, I feel confident that our team will once again host an AFC championship and eventually bring another Lombardi Trophy back home. Our rookie players are very impressive and I believe we found some diamonds in the rough.
